The Origin of Clean Up the World Weekend

 Clean Up the World Weekend (original name: World Cleanup Day) is an international social action dedicated to responding to the world's uncontrolled land waste and marine debris problems by affecting changes in human behavior patterns.

Clean the World Day was founded by Ian Kiernan . Ian is a keen sailor who, during a solo round-the-world race in 1987, was struck by the amount of garbage clogging the world's oceans.He saw its devastating impact on nature and decided to take action. With the support of the Friends Committee, he organized a community campaign to clean up Sydney Harbour.

In 1990, Clean Up held the first national, community-based cleanup day, and in 1993, with support from the United Nations Environment Program, Clean Up the World was launched, mobilizing 30 million people in 80 countries people.

2023 is the 30th year of Clean Up the World and a day worth remembering.
